A week after I conceived my daughter, I began on the long (and often frustrating) journey of figuring out what to wear to accommodate my new shape and lifestyle. While I’ve conquered most the body changes of pregnancy and beyond, having a wee one continues to play a large roll in dictating what I wear.
So, let’s talk about what to wear on a summer play date and why I think this outfit is such a perfect example. (My day included tea-partying, beaching, parking and playing with 4 fabulous girlies.)
1. Denim Shorts – Destroyed or clean cut, long or short, relaxed or tailored, there’s a pair out there for everyone’s taste and everyone’s body type. You can find them at pretty much every store in town so whatever you budget is, you’re sure to have an array of choices. Unless you opt for the super light variety (that’s not very smart of you), most denim is magical when it comes to camouflaging spills (and let’s face it, you will be spilled on). You can sit on the floor, on the grass, in the sand, or in the dirt without a care in the world.
2. Thrifted Silk Tops – The perfect pairing to your trusty and durable denim bottom is without a doubt a lovely silk top. You can hit up any retail store for a large selection in a range of prices OR you can try a local thrift shop and spend pennies for a one-of-a-kind find. The top I’m wearing was 10 cents. Bananas, I know. Button ups, tees, tanks, blod and bright, or soft and ladylike, the options are endless. Being dressier on top makes me fell more put together. I can play in the dirt and then stop at a store on my way home and not look like a hobo. And remember the spillage we talked about? When your top only cost a few dollars, it’s no big thing! (I machine wash cold and hang dry, treat with a stain remover as needed).
3. Accessories – I kept things simple with this outfit, a woven belt to add texture, a large watch and chunky, smoked quartz earrings. Embrace what feels like you when accessorizing. It’s the icing on the cake of your outfit, and even the most delicate chain can add so much to finishing off a look. While I love getting something new in the accessory department, I often return to old favourites. Jewelry has somewhat of a magical quality to me, as if it holds on to the memories of its adventures. I’ve certainly had my share of tough days as a new Mom, and on those days especially, I find it comforting to wear an accessory that has a lovely, sentimental value to me.
PS – Thanks K, I, & R for the fabulous day! We had a wonderful time!
